Pressure Cracks – This Is Called Survival
(War Against Records)
We can all agree that Fever 333 fucking rips, right? The same can be said about Letlive. So, does everything frontman Jason Butler touch turn to gold? Well, if “Like Father Like None,” the opening detonation off This Is Called Survival, the latest EP from his politically-charged and socially-aware hardcore outfit Pressure Cracks (bonus points for the ex-Scars of Tomorrow members), is any indication, the answer is a resounding yes. That should probably be something more akin to FUCK YES. The little hairs on the back of your neck will be standing at full attention once you hear Butler peel off lengthy scathing vocal refrains amidst a smattering of shit-stomping riffs and track-meet drumming on this opening track.
Don’t blink, because this shit pulls no punches and gives no quarter; This Is Called Survival is off to the races on the blistering “Ready For You,” a venomous riff-fest that hits like a 10-ton bomb, “Shhh” somehow manages to up the amplitude, aggression and alacrity by way of dense shreds, ruthless breakdowns and urgent barks, and closer “Big T Youth” is laced with poignant barbs like ‘heaven might be suitable but hell on earth is beautiful.’ Shit makes you think. And maybe that’s the point.
This Is Called Survival is a tight blast of hardcore punk done right, a pure 12-minute assault on the senses. Or maybe it’s more like an attack on your central nervous system. Either way, make sure you have a bottle of Advil handy because your head is going to hurt when all is said and done. This Is Called Survival fucks.
